PREPARING FOR AN EMERGENCY: 6 Steps to Help Prevent Disease (Like the Coronavirus)

The COVID-19 Virus, Coronavirus, many are having a disproportionate reaction to what it actually is. However, it is an opportunity for many to see how they might fair in an emergency. Whether a real pandemic, an earthquake, hurricane or tornado, it is wise for families to have a plan or a couple of plans for those emergencies. Let’s first look at the current virus, how to avoid it, and discuss some basic planning for everyday people.
The Corona Virus is essentially a flu like virus for which the Center for Disease Control (CDC2020) recommends basic everyday hygiene as the best way to prevent the disease.
Remember these 6 things:
1. Wash your hands frequently everyday, even more so in public places.
2. Vitamins with immune building components like Vitamin C and D are always good to keep the immune system strong, not just in an emergency.
3. Washing food, especially produce, which may have had dozens of people touching it before you ever pick it up, this is a great way to stop the spread of illness.
4. Use antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers.
5. In highly prone areas for any virus, like the bay area in California and Seattle where the Coronavirus is appearing, it is a good idea to refrain from shaking hands. Instead, use fist bumps or other types of minimal touch methods of communication.
6. In office work industries, taking a few weeks to work from home is also effective and keeps business running with less risk of spread.
There are many other ideas floating around the University of Google, but these are likely the most effective.
